“LANDAU AS A TEACHER”

Abstract
Landau was a prominent physicist who made fundamental contributions to many areas of theoretical physics.  He was awarded the 1962 Nobel Prize in Physics for his development of a mathematical theory of superfluidity. Landau was the principal founder of a great tradition of theoretical physics in the Soviet Union, which is sometimes referred to as the "Landau school".

Pitaevskii has worked in Landau’s department during 1955-1962 starting as Ph.D. student and continuing as a researcher. They interacted virtually every day until Landau’s scientific career was brought to an abrupt end by a tragic car accident on January 7, 1962. Pitaevskii coauthored several volumes of the famous Landau course on Theoretical Physics and is currently editor of the course.

Pitaevskii will tell us about his experience working together with L. D. Landau, about the method which Landau used to select his students, about the atmosphere and the rules in his department, about his seminars and his style in discussions.
